The best time of year to clean a roof in the UK

Short version: spring and early autumn are ideal — but a roof clean works safely in almost any season. Here's why the timing matters, and when not to bother waiting.

The best windows: spring and early autumn

If you want the single best answer, it's March to May or September to October. There are two reasons these windows win.

First, the weather. The biocide we apply works best in mild, dry conditions, and the roof needs a chance to dry out properly after the clean. Spring and early autumn in Gloucestershire give you plenty of those days without the extremes of mid-summer heat or mid-winter frost.

Second, the timing relative to how moss grows. Moss and algae spread fastest through the damp, mild parts of the year. Cleaning in spring sets you up clean for the whole summer; cleaning in early autumn clears off a summer's growth before the wet winter months when moss really takes hold. Either way, you're getting ahead of the growth rather than chasing it.

Can you clean a roof in summer?

Yes — summer is fine, and it's our busiest season for a reason: the weather is reliable and results look fantastic in the sunshine. The only thing to watch is a proper heatwave. In very hot, direct sun the biocide can dry on the surface before it's had time to soak in and do its job, so on the hottest days we'll sometimes work earlier or later, or pick a slightly cooler day. Nothing you need to worry about — it's our job to manage it.

Can you clean a roof in winter?

Usually, yes. The two things we won't work in are frost/ice and high winds — both because it's genuinely dangerous to be up a ladder, and because biocide does little when it's freezing. But the British winter is full of mild, dry, still days, and on those a roof clean is perfectly fine.

There's actually an upside to winter: it's quieter, so it's often easier to get a booking that suits you. The moss removal happens just the same, and the biocide carries on working gradually as the weather warms into spring.

Does the season change the result?

The moss removal itself works in any season, whichever of our two methods you go for. A low-pressure clean gently washes the moss and algae off there and then, so the roof looks clean the same day. A moss scrape (also known as soft washing) hand-scrapes the moss off and lets the biocide clear the rest over the following weeks to months — the same clean, moss-free finish, just gradual rather than instant. Neither is high-pressure jet washing, which can damage tiles.

What changes with the season is how quickly the biocide shows its full effect. In mild weather it works fast and the roof keeps looking better for weeks after we leave. In cold weather it works more slowly, but it still works. So a winter clean isn't a worse clean — the gradual "keeps improving" phase just stretches out a bit longer.

The honest advice: don't wait for the "perfect" month

Here's the thing we tell everyone who calls in November worried they've "missed the window": the best time to clean a roof is when it needs it. Moss that's lifting tiles or sliding into your gutters isn't going to politely wait until next March. If it's bad now, dealing with it now protects the roof now.

Use the seasons as a guide for planning ahead, not as a reason to put off a job that's overdue. If you're not sure whether yours can wait, send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

Common questions

Timing a roof clean — quick answers

What is the best time of year to clean a roof?

Spring (March–May) and early autumn (September–October). The weather is mild and dry enough for the biocide to work and the roof to dry, and you head into the growing seasons with the moss already dealt with. Both our methods — a low-pressure clean and a moss scrape — can be done safely at almost any time of year, though.

Can you clean a roof in winter?

Usually yes, outside of frost, ice and high winds. We avoid freezing or icy days — it's unsafe at height and the biocide works less well in the cold — but in a mild, dry winter spell a roof clean is perfectly fine. Winter is quieter too, so it's often easier to book.

Does it matter what season I remove moss in?

The moss removal works in any season. What changes is the biocide — it works fastest in milder weather, so a spring or early-autumn treatment gives the quickest visible result. A winter clean still removes the moss and treats the roof; the biocide just keeps working more gradually as the weather warms.

How long does a roof clean last?

With a biocide treatment, most roofs stay clear for around two years. Timing your clean for spring or early autumn means you get the full benefit through the main growing seasons, when moss and algae spread fastest.
